Our mission at Rock Stable Meats is to operate our family hobby farm in a manner that supports a way of life for the employees and owners that is rooted in the integrity of our values, to produce high quality meat as a result of being responsible stewards of our soil and animals, and to offer meat that aligns with your values and nutritional needs.
The Basics of How We raise animals
Our beef is sourced from the new farm on the Airy Mont Farm land, Havenwood Farms. They have a 100 cow Jersey herd, and are breeding over half of their animals to beef, mostly Southpole. The steers are raised to slaughtering age on pasture year round with supplemental hay fed during the winter months. They are also fed supplemental grain year round to aid in growth and health. We work with them closely to ensure the highest quality product!
We buy 2 month old pigs from Green Sprig Ag. They are a mixture of Berkshire, Yorkshire, Tamworth, and Duroc breeds. The breeder has found that this aids in meat tenderness (Berkshire), mothering ability (Yorkshire & Tamworth), and the ability to survive harsher weather conditions (Duroc). They are raised in the special pig weed patch and fed Green Sprig Ag’s special pig feed, which is a complete formula mixture of corn, roasted soybeans, a variety of small grains, minerals, and virgin soybean oil. We also offer them extra milk from our home Jersey cows, and waste vegetables (lettuce, cabbage, banana peels, tomatoes, etc.) from our restaurant. We find that pigs are very smart at not eating too much of one thing when they can’t physically handle it, so it is virtually impossible to overfeed them.
All of our animals are Hormone and Steroid free. We believe strongly in natural growth and naturally healthy animals due to proper feeding and raising. We also believe hormones and steroids negatively affect the end product, and we are not willing to compromise quality for quick growth.
